That said- I use roaming profiles on my own home network as well as pretty much all the networks I support, & personally find them very handy. Even if you never log into another workstation, it means that replacing a failed desktop hard drive is a lot easier. If you set up profiles properly they should work.

As to reliability, RAID1 and RAID5 reduce down-time due to failed disks. They do not replace backups. For backups the currently cheapest solution is external USB HDDs.
